Typically, these questions look impossible because they:

  • Combine 2–3 different topics into one problem.

  • Tell long, complex stories that hide the actual math.

  • Require "backward thinking" or identifying a hidden constant.

💡 Practical Examples: The AL1 Way to Solve Them


Example 1: The Ratio Trap (Ratio + Part-Whole)

  • The Problem: A shop sells apples and oranges in a 3:5 ratio. After selling 24 more oranges, the ratio becomes 3:4.

  • The AL1 Strategy: Don't panic! Start by drawing a bar model.

  • The "Aha!" Moment: Only the oranges changed. The apples stayed the same. By comparing the "before" and "after," you see the difference of 1 unit equals 24 oranges.

  • Parent Tip: Tell your child, "Something always stays the same. Find that first".


Example 2: The Speed & Time Favourite

  • The Problem: Ali cycles to school. If he goes 4 km/h faster, he’s 10 minutes early. If he goes 2 km/h slower, he’s 15 minutes late.

  • The AL1 Strategy: Draw a table to organize the data.

  • The Secret: Since the distance to school doesn't change, distance is your hidden constant.
