Taking O-Level Music in Singapore: What No One Tells You

When we think about O-Levels, we often picture the usual subjects – English, Math, Science, Humanities. But did you know there’s a unique academic path for students who live and breathe music?

Enter the O-Level MOE Music Programme – a rigorous two-year course that treats music not just as a co-curricular activity, but as a structured and enriching academic discipline for serious young musicians.

We spoke with Marcus Chew, founder of Beyond Mars Music Academy, who shares how this programme shaped his journey – not just as a student, but as a musician, educator, and creative thinker.

🎶 So… What Exactly Is the O-Level MOE Music Programme?

Unlike general music classes most students take in lower secondary, the O-Level Music Programme goes deeper. It’s designed for students with strong musical passion and potential – and it’s not just about playing well. Students learn:

  • 🎵 Music theory and composition

  • 🧠 Critical listening and analysis

  • 🕰️ Music history – from classical to contemporary

  • 💬 Communicating ideas through music

And yes, you take this subject like any other O-Level subject, with written and practical exams!

“It’s a rare academic space where music is seen not just as a hobby, but a real discipline,” Marcus shares.

💡 Why Marcus Chose It

Even as a child, Marcus felt he had a natural flair for music. When the opportunity came to study music formally as an O-Level subject, he didn’t hesitate. The idea of studying music felt both exciting and purposeful.

“I thought it would be amazing to dive deeper into something I loved – and also stand out academically from my peers who were doing the usual subjects.”

📝 The Preparation

Students can join the O-Level MOE Music Programme by applying through their secondary school, depending on the school’s offerings. In Marcus’s case, he had to prepare two solo pieces on his main instrument (the piano), demonstrate theoretical knowledge ranging from Western to Asian music, and undergo a face-to-face interview.

He also had help – his older brother had gone through the programme and guided him along the way.

And now, Marcus hopes to help others excel in the programme as well.

🚧 The Challenges (and How He Overcame Them)

Taking the O-Level Music Programme wasn’t all smooth sailing. Marcus had to travel to another school for classes, on top of his usual workload. The syllabus was demanding, covering a huge range of content in just two years – and then there was the practical component: performing three pieces at exam standard.

“It was intense. But I stayed disciplined with my time and reminded myself why I chose this in the first place.”

🎓 What Students Can Gain from This Programme

Beyond strong music theory and performance skills, Marcus says the programme taught him:

  • 🕰️ Time management

  • 💭 Critical and creative thinking

  • 💪 Independence and self-discipline

  • 🎭 Artistic expression

  • ✨ A stronger identity as a musician

And yes – it can boost your grades too. Students who take GCE O-Level Higher Music can use it as an R1/R3 (in lieu of their Humanities grade) in the calculation of L1R5 (for Junior Colleges), or R1/R2 in the calculation of L1R4 (for Millennia Institute).

💬 Final Thoughts: Why It Matters

“The biggest takeaway? Exposure,” Marcus says. “I learned about genres and musical traditions I’d never encountered before. It completely changed how I perform, compose, and teach today.”

Another key takeaway was learning to be self-motivated and resourceful. Since he had to attend classes externally, he quickly learned how to manage his time and seek out resources independently.

It also taught him a priceless lesson: If you want something badly enough, you’ll find a way to make it happen.
