Would Removing the PSLE Really Make Things Less Stressful? Let’s Talk About It.

Let’s be honest: just hearing the word “PSLE” makes many parents (and kids) feel their stomachs flip a little. 😅 It’s been a big part of the Singapore education system for decades—and also a big source of stress.

But lately, there’s been a buzz: What if we just removed the PSLE altogether? Wouldn’t that make life easier for everyone? 🤔

The truth? It’s not so straightforward.

The Pressure Isn't Just From the PSLE Itself

According to MOE, the PSLE isn’t the root of all stress — it’s often how we perceive it. The pressure comes from wanting the “best” schools, chasing perfect scores, and comparing kids to each other (yup, it starts earlier than we’d like to admit).

Even if the PSLE disappeared tomorrow, would the stress magically vanish? Probably not. Parents might still push hard, students might still feel the need to prove themselves, and tuition centres might still be packed. 😬

So... What Can We Do Instead?

We can’t control the entire system, but we can shift the way we support our kids through it.

👂 Start by Listening, Not Lecturing

Ask your child how they feel about the exams, the pressure, and even the idea of secondary school. Sometimes they just need a safe space to say, “I’m scared” or “I don’t know if I can do this.”

🎯 Focus on Growth, Not Just Grades

Instead of asking “Why didn’t you get full marks?”, try “What do you think you understood well, and what can we work on together?” That small shift makes a big difference.

🧠 Help Them Build Exam Skills Gradually

Studying for a big exam like the PSLE is a chance to learn focus, resilience, and time management—not just how to do MCQs faster. And these are skills they’ll need way beyond Primary 6.

Tips to Keep PSLE Stress in Check at Home

💤 Protect their rest timeBurnout is real. Make sure your child gets proper sleep, downtime, and some screen-free chill moments.

📅 Make revision feel less overwhelmingUse a daily plan with small goals. 20 minutes of focused revision beats 2 hours of distracted “study.”

🌈 Celebrate effort, not just outcomesDid your child revise even when they didn’t feel like it? That’s a win. Keep reinforcing a growth mindset.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Don’t walk the PSLE journey aloneReach out to other parents, educators, or just have a heart-to-heart over supper. You’re not the only one navigating this maze.

At one2tuition, we don’t believe in simply “prepping for PSLE.” We believe in helping students learn how to think, manage stress, and build real confidence in what they know.

We take a personalized, human-first approach—because no two learners are alike. And when students feel seen and supported, results follow.
